How to Move a Digital Store off Shopify

Move digital downloads off Shopify without losing buyers: export catalog, upload files, set redirects, and keep merch on Shopify if you need it.

Moving digital products off Shopify does not mean burning the store down. Many creators keep Shopify for merch or habit traffic and move file checkout to a store built for downloads. This checklist is for that switch.

Goal: same products, your brand, instant delivery, without paying Shopify plus a downloads app for a catalog that is mostly ZIPs.

Migration checklist

  1. Export the catalog. Titles, prices, descriptions, tags, and cover art. Note which SKUs are digital-only.
  2. Gather the files. Masters, ZIPs, license PDFs, and any stem or preview assets. Upload into the new store before you cut traffic over.
  3. Recreate products on Roqstar. Set licenses, prices, and delivery. Use digital downloads or your niche page as the model.
  4. Connect domain or subdomain. Point shop.example.com or a dedicated domain at the new storefront when you are ready.
  5. Import or rebuild the email list. Past buyers and subscribers matter more than old Shopify order IDs for most file sellers.
  6. Redirect key URLs. Map top product and collection links from Shopify to the new product pages so SEO and bookmarks do not die.
  7. Update bio and ads. Link in bio, YouTube descriptions, and paid campaigns should hit the new checkout.
  8. Decide what stays on Shopify. Merch, POS, and physical SKUs can remain. Digital SKUs can point out.

What not to stress

You do not need a perfect one-click importer for every historical order. Buyers care that the next purchase downloads cleanly and that re-downloads work from a portal. Old Shopify customers can get a short email with the new store link.

Fee and fit check before you move

Run the numbers on the Shopify alternative calculator. Read Shopify fees for digital products and when Shopify is overkill if you are still deciding.
